Sea Festival
Hundreds of people, from toddlers to grandparents, enjoyed the Flux Under the Sea Festival on Saturday 20 September 2008. The festival was another important step in the Flux programme of working in North Swindon, creating new traditions for a new community.
The weather was glorious and children, dressed as mermaids and pirates, delighted in games, face painting, street theatre, a magical sea grotto and the festival finale - a procession of a huge sea monster and dolphin. The FluxMobile was also present, offering shanty animation workshops. Participants were invited to create a sea creature out of clay and then make a short animation. One little boy announced, “This is a nice place.”
Meanwhile, six-year-old Annabel, who was at the Festival with her grandparents from beginning to end, said, “The sea monster was good, I liked walking around. It was great fun, I got to wave and shake something.”
Great
Rob Chapman said, “It’s been great. There’s not so much community stuff for this part of town, so this is really good,” while Julie Preedy explained, “The children are loving it. We need something like this to get people together. It’s very good.”Organiser Rebecca Lloyd said, “It’s been absolutely brilliant, it’s astonished a lot of children to see all the bright colours, the monster, the pirates. The spirit and enthusiasm of the actors caught on so much that many of the children in fancy dress joined in street theatre - the atmosphere’s been absolutely beautiful."
Prior to the festival Flux organised three family art workshops to make the sea monster and dolphin.
