Lantern Making Workshops
The Lantern Workshops, March 2008
Over 150 people dropped into North Swindon library one Saturday and turned ordinary jam jars into colourful lanterns.
Children as young as eighteen months old, right up to pensioners, and all ages in between, had a hand at decorating a lantern for the first ever North Swindon parade.
The Flux project hopes to create a new tradition for a new community. Ella Bissett Johnson, Flux Community Coordinator, was delighted with the workshops. "Well done to everyone who took part. It was a really exciting day and we had 200 lanterns created."
Tracey Terrett, who brought her two children, Katie and Holly, said, "It's brilliant, we came across it by chance, the kids and I have enjoyed it."
Geoff Kennedy and his children Niall (aged 6) and Ryan (aged 3) had a great time too. Niall said, "I like making the lanterns, I like sticking things on." Geoff added, "We are planning to come to the parade, it gets people together in a nice gathering, it's a bit of community support for the area, which was lacking at the start."
Library Assistant Lynn Ford said the workshops were, "fabulous, they're very popular and a really great idea. Anything to promote the area and togetherness has got to be good."
