St Francis School Coastal Project
Evil Twins James and Mark Carroll, and musician Barry Andrews delivered a two-day workshop at St Francis School to compile a website with material gleaned from the class residential week at Sandymouth. This included photography, video, animations and music composition, along the theme of coasts and coastlines, which was being studied as part of their school curriculum.
The class was split into groups and worked on a rotation basis to learn skills in photography, video, and web design, and on the second day they took part in a music composition group.
Swindon Youth Festival at the Town Gardens (15 September)
A very hands-on, lively, drop-in session on music and video was on hand for those attending the youth festival. Digital artist Dani Landau took groups of young people to make videos, while Barry worked on music with other groups. Young people were encouraged to make some music to accompany their pieces of film and edit the two together on the bus and so promote the creative use of digital media.
One little girl had a favourite song she wanted to record so she spent half an hour with Barry doing this and took away a CD of herself singing which seemed to delight her and her family. Another group had their first attempt at a pop video.
Legge House (24 October)
The Fluxmobile went to Legge House and worked with a group of foster care children, through Swindon Borough Council’s Childrens Services, who were on a two-day residential stay at Legge House during half term.
Dani worked with the girls on poetry, asking the girls to say one word about their experience at Legge House, which provided a ‘peg’ on which to hang a narrative. The girls then took the video cameras around the grounds and made some video to illustrate their words.
Meanwhile, another group of Years 5 and 6 did a one-day workshop, making a documentary and accompanying music on the theme of the Tudors. All the children learnt filmmaking skills including using the boom for sound, camera-work and interviewing techniques. They worked on music pieces to accompany the film which they entitled ‘Well Tudor’!
St Francis School (15 November 07)
The Fluxmobile went to St Francis School, North Swindon, as part of their ICT day. Staff worked with a group of Year 5/6 children on their curriculum subject The Tudors. The children worked as a film crew to make a documentary about their study of the ‘terrible’ tudors and learnt skills in camera work, sound, and documentary style interviewing.
Another group worked with Barry on tudor music and came up with a piece to use in the final film, described by one of the children as, "Well Tudor!!"
Penhill
This project was aimed at bringing in Year 6 parents to work with their children on digital arts, using software such as Photobooth and Garageband to illustrate their interests. When children get to the last year of primary, parents tend not to have as much input or communication with the school and can loose touch with the progress of their child. This project has enabled six parents to come onto the FluxMobile and work with their child on an arts project of their own choosing. This work was supported and funded by Swindon Borough Council’s Family Learning Dept.
Blunsdon Half Term Films
Thirty children from the Blunsdon area worked over three days with Mel Shearsmith to make a film in a day. They also worked on music for the films with music artist Barry Andrews. The theme was fairy tales and the films were called Cindy Umbrella, Bob the Beast and Goth Black.
Imaging Festival
On a cold and frosty day in November, Barry and Dani delivered a drop-in workshop outside the Town Hall as part of Create Studios’ Imaging Festival.
They worked with over 40 people of all ages to make video pieces with accompanying music. The pieces were edited in time for the Seen on Screen session held at Create Studios that evening. Highlights included an 11-minute rap and visuals of a breakdance routine.
