Flux

What was Flux?

Flux activities in the community and at Isambard SchoolFlux was a programme of arts activities for children and young people in Priory Vale - a large, new housing development in North Swindon. It was managed by Artsmad, an arts education agency, which is part of Swindon Borough Council, and Arts Council England, in partnership with local and regional organisations. It provided access to high quality arts experiences for children and young people.

Flux looked at the effects of providing positive arts activities for young people in order to discourage disaffection and anti-social behaviour in the longer term. There was an extensive programme of arts activities in partnership with schools, community centres and youth centres.

Flux has seen fantastic activities, from puppet making workshops, to rock schools, from cartoon clubs to web design. Please see our activities section for a good idea of what we've been up to.

Where was Flux based?

Flux was based in the brand new secondary school in the neighbourhood, Isambard Community School, which opened in September 2007.

Who was Flux aimed at?

Dance activityA key target group for the project was the first two years' intake of Isambard School. We worked intensively with these students, both in the school curriculum, and after school, to get them participating in arts activities and to encourage some of them to work towards possible training and careers in the creative industries.

We also provided an extensive programme of community events, family learning, holiday and evening work, some of which were delivered by our newly acquired FluxMobile - a custom designed mobile film and music studio equipped with the latest digital technology.

FluxMobile activitiesPart of our plan involved bringing professional artists and specialists to lead their arts lessons. This large team of artists worked alongside the teaching staff to plan and deliver the curriculum. Over half of the pupils in Isambard school worked towards their Arts Award, which gave them a nationally recognised qualification by the end of their first year.

The Flux project was only possible because we worked closely with our expert local partners.

This whole project was documented by a group of specially trained young people in collaboration with our research team from the University of Bath.

Flux ended in July 2009.
