Evaluation

Young documentors at workFlux is being documented by a group of specially trained young people in collaboration with our research team from the University of Bath.

Flux Evaluation: ‘The Journey is the Destination’

An Evaluation Study by ICIA  (Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts), University of Bath.

Flux identifies itself as an ‘action research’ project. It is testing out new ways of making participation in the arts accessible to young people in the heart of the new community of Priory Vale. The project aims to provide evidence of the positive impact of participation in the arts, and to consider how this investment in arts activities might impact upon a new community.

As an action research project, reflection, and self-evaluation by all of those taking part – young people, artists, teachers – are at the heart of Flux’s projects and processes.  This means that everyone involved in the project considers themselves to be researchers, and will be encouraged to reflect upon and document their own processes (through keeping a journal, photography, discussion etc.)

A critical role for the Evaluation Team will be to support the participants in this process, through a range of methods including:

  • training
  • mentoring
  • documenting processes and outcomes
  • facilitating discussion and sense-making by the participants
  • and through analysis and dissemination of the findings.

In particular we want to support the young people taking part to tell their stories of the Flux project, to tell us how they feel about the project; how it might be impacting on their lives and what kind of culture they might be generating in their community. We believe it is critical that the young peoples’ responses are able to inform the way in which the Flux programme develops, and the way in which it is evaluated.

Comments about being a documentor

Isambard Documentors

A key part of the evaluation is ‘Documenting Flux’, a project in which film-maker Paul Gilbert, and photographer Elise Hurcombe are supporting a team of young participants The IDs (Isambard Documentors), to develop a range of forms of project documentation – photography, video, interviews, journals - and we hope also to inform the agenda for the evaluation process.
