Big Weekend

Culture Swindon and Artsmad helped to organise the biggest outreach programme ever to accompany the Radio 1 Big Weekend.
Besides helping young people to document the festival – by interviewing, photographing and videoing people involved during the the event at Lydiard Park - they also laid on a range of activities during the run up:
- a huge piece of urban art created by young people from Health First Youth Centre
- a school appearance by JLS and Ironik
- a careers event at the Town Hall and visits to the site to see it being built
- The Big Bank Holiday event in the town centre
- and a series of Fringe gigs.
All of this was documented by a special team of young people aged between 12 and 21. They had special passes and roamed the area gathering information. Their videos will be edited.

7-year-old Chris Walsh said afterwards, "Thank you so much for the opportunity to work on this project. I really hope it will be the first step into the industry and it made me realise how much I love photography as well.” In fact Chris impressed Swindon Web so much that they asked him to be one of their freelance visual reporters.
Kirsty Carter, Artsmad Director, said the Big Weekend had been a lot of work but had been amazing. “It went so well, but we’ve had unexpected outcomes too, including top BBC professionals agreeing to return to be part of another careers event. It’s been an unforgettable experience for the young people involved.”
